My Sister Lives on the Mantle Piece

My Sister Lives on the Mantle Piece by Annabel Pitcher

Ten-year-old Jamie has a sister, who in his eyes, is responsible for the breakup of his family. Rose, his twin sister, always has to share his spotlight. The problem is Rose has been dead for years. Each year on their birthday, his dad gives Rose a piece of cake to celebrate the big day.

This touching story, told from Jamie’s point of view allows the reader to empathize with Jamie the loss of his sister and how the grief of the family has changed the family together. Through Jamie’s friendship with a young classmate, we see how prejudice can impact both sides and an innocent relationship can bring an understanding between all.

Teens who have recently had grief in their life can easily identify with Jamie. This would be a great book club read to discuss grief and prejudice.
