a simple songSimple Song by Melody Carlson

Katrina Yoder loves to sing. As being a part of the Amish community, singing is not allowed except for in church. Katrina loves to sing but knows that she will have to give it up if she becomes a member of the Amish church. Katrina’s best friend, Bekka pushes the limit of her rumspringa by watching t.v. Bekka has been watching the American Star show which tries to find the best singer in the country. Bekka talks Katrina into auditioning for the show to pay for a needed surgery for her father.

A secondary plot and mystery involves her recently deceased grandmother. Katrina misses her grandmother a lot. She was given a few of her grandmother’s things by her aunt. The items stir up a secret her grandmother has kept from the family and one that Katrina and her aunt are determined to discover.

Melody Carlson has written a story centering around an Amish character but explores the question how far would a person go to accomplish something while trying to keep their values and beliefs. Simple Song explores the reality t.v. craze of today with the twist of the Amish values. The book is a quick read but challenges the characters and readers to explore how far would you bend your values to win something. This book would be a great book club book for teens. Fans of Melody Carlson will not be disappointed with Simple Song.
